Stony Brook Philosophy DepartmentDoctoral PlacementOverview |
The Stony Brook University Philosophy Department opened its doors to doctoral students in 1970. The first doctorates were completed in 1975 -- the same year of the department's first placement -- Terry Pinkard* at Vanderbilt University. Since 1975, more than 160 doctorates have been graduated by the Philosophy Department. Most of them have been placed in colleges and universities in the US, some in other countries. The program continues to thrive and grow. The department's placements are an indication of the importance that this program has achieved over the years. Many of our graduates are now recognized names and significant figures on the contemporary philosophical scene. In October 2003, more than a third of our graduates returned to the department for an exciting two-day philosophy conference celebrating and marking 30 years of the doctoral program. These Placement pages document the year of graduation of Stony Brook Philosophy Doctorates with their dissertation titles. A list of placements since 1975 and a new special feature -- the names and vitae of currently available placement candidates -- are also provided. We hope that this information will be of value to those seeking to be informed about the doctoral program but also for those departments seeking to hire Stony Brook philosophy program graduates. |
