Introduction

This is a research workshop open to all interested in applied micro-economic research.  Weekly seminars by faculty, students and visitors provide valuable professional development skills.  Students taking this for credit are required to present at least once. The main objective of these presentations are to move the student forward in a productive manner on a research project – second year papers, proposal defenses, dissertation defenses, job talks, and/or conference presentations.  Some students will be searching for topics while others will be in the midst of  their own project.  The students gain presentation skills and feedback in their research.

Attendance is a requirement.  If you miss more than one session without an excuse your grade will be affected.

Assignments

1.      Plan one seminar presentation. This can be based on a paper you are working on or a paper related to your area of interest if you are seeking a topic.

-         one week prior to your talk you must turn in the following:

o       a memo to me informing me of your objectives.  What do you hope to gain?  Is there a specific methodological focused question you need help with?  Are you practicing for a conference talk?  Do you want feedback on progress and how to proceed, you are proposing a topic by presenting related research…

o       a paper draft, abstract, or brief description of the research you will be presenting. If it is someone else’s work turn in that paper.

-         This represents 50% of your grade

2.  By the end of the semester you must turn in one discussion/report of any presentation you choose from the semester.  The style and length will be like a referee report.  This is worth 25% of your grade.

3.  Participation counts for 25% of your grade.  This includes showing up and active involvement.

I look forward to a  productive and engaging semester!
