Expression Data:

Teresa did a two hybrid screen to look for proteins that interact with the S. cerevisiae kinase Mek1 which is only expressed in cells undergoing meiosis. She found several candidates including the following:

ORF name/ Gene name
YAL024c/ LTE1
YBR098w/ (none)
YLR263w/ RED1
YHR124w/ NDT80
YHR031c/ (none)

This is too many candidates to study at once. Use the gene expression data available at: http://cmgm.stanford.edu/pbrown/sporulation/search.html (this expression data can also be accessed through the individual gene pages at SGD) to decide which genes look most promising to be "real" interacting proteins.

To use this expression database type in the name of the orf or gene then hit search. A graphic appears showing the change in level of expression of the gene during sporulation. Red means increased expression, black no change, and green decreased.

Meiosis occurs early during the course of sporulation (2 - 5 hrs.)

Additional information to consider in determining which gene to pursue, is the known phenotype(s) of each candidate. You can browse what's known about the function of MEK1 and these various genes at SGD (http://www.yeastgenome.org). Would you still choose the same gene(s) to pursue?
