Academic Honesty

Each student must pursue his or her academic goals honestly and be personally accountable for all submitted work. Representing another person's work as your own is always wrong. Any suspected instance of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Academic Judiciary. For more comprehensive information on academic integrity, including categories of academic dishonesty, please refer to the academic judiciary website at www.stonybrook.edu/uaa/academicjudiciary/

Grade Basis

Essay 1  17%
Essay 2  30%
Take Home Examination  16%
Final Exam 25%
Participation 12%

Writing Assignments

  • Format. All written work, including any response papers submitted in hard copy, should be typed, double-spaced, on 8.5 X 5 paper, with 1-inch margins. 12-point font only. Pages should be numbered. Citations should conform to MLA style (consult MLA Handbook). Be professional: the pages should have headers with numbers, and they should be stapled.
  • Submitting your work. Students should attach the signed checklist to all submissions. We strongly encourage you to consult the checklist as you write and revise the essay, instead of just tacking it on at the end. A paper is considered late if it is not brought to class, at the beginning of class, on the date due. Late assignments will be accepted only if the student has a documented medical excuse or similar emergency. Emailed papers WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED without arrangements in advance.
  • Appeals. Any appeals of essay grades should be submitted in writing, with a detailed explanation of why the student feels the grade is undeserved or mistaken. The appeal should refer to the essay grading rubric, which will be attached to the essay by the section instructor. Students should direct initial appeals to their section instructors. If the student and section instructor remain in disagreement, the student should contact Professor Newman.
Attendance:
  • Attendance at lectures and discussion sections is required. On a case-by-case basis, necessary absences may be excused with advance notice. Absences will only be excused retroactively with a doctor's note. More than two unexcused absences will adversely affect your grade.
  • More than two late arrivals will count as an unexcused absence.
  • Participation is mandatory. The section grade will be based on your participation in discussions and on any section assignments or activities.

Disability:
  • If you have a physical, psychological, medical, or learning disability that may impact your course work, please contact Disability Support Services at (631) 632-6748 or http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/dss/. They will determine with you what accommodations are necessary and appropriate.  All information and documentation is confidential.

Students who require assistance during emergency evacuation are encouraged to discuss their needs with their professors and Disability Support Services. For procedures and information go to the following website: http://www.sunysb.edu/ehs/fire/disabilities.shtml

Communications:

It is the student's responsibility to:
  • Ensure that the email in the BlackBoard system is correct, or that the instructor is supplied with their correct email.
  • That they check this email account regularly/
Changes to the schedule, including assignments, will be announced in class, posted on the e-syllabus, and may also be communicated by email. Not checking or receiving email will not be an accepted as an excuse for failing to keep up with assigned readings or writings.  Please refer to the on-line syllabus rather than any print-outs you made at the beginning of the semester.
