MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

The requirements for completion of the Stony Brook Graduate Certificate in Art and Philosophy are as follows:

A.    [three credits]

    FOR ALL STUDENTS IN THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

One ArtPHIL Certificate Program Joint Seminar.  The Certificate Program Joint Seminar will be taught by at least two faculty, one each from Art and from Philosophy.  It will focus on issues that emerge when philosophical thought and material art practices engage.  These issues may be pursued chronologically (e.g. Renaissance, Romanticism, or Postmodernism) or thematically (e.g. art and politics, the question of style, performance, or work and image) or theoretically (e.g. philosophy and modern art, theory of the avant-garde, traditional/ modern/ postmodern art theory and practice).  Typically, this course will be team-taught by faculty members from both Philosophy and Art. Students in philosophy will be expected to analyze and interpret visual materials as well as texts in art history and criticism, while students in art history and criticism will be expected to develop a facility with philosophical theories, concepts, and texts.

 

 

B.   [nine credits]

 

    FOR PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE STUDENTS: Three graduate seminars offered by the Department of Art (determined in consultation with the Certificate Program Director).  These courses may be in Art Theory, Criticism, Methodology, or History. 

FOR ART HISTORY AND CRITICISM GRADUATE STUDENTS:

I.     At least TWO of the  following   seminars in Philosophy:

PHI 610: Philosophy and the Arts

PHI 637: Epistemology (with appropriate content)

PHI 641: Aesthetics

PHI 643: Semiotics

An acceptable substitute, such as a relevant PHI 619 Topics Seminar, or CLT 601, 602, or 603  (if taught by a Certificate Program faculty member), or another graduate seminar with appropriate content.

        II.  A THIRD seminar may be taken from the group above but one of the following seminars is recommended:

     PHI 600-604: History of Philosophy

 PHI 630: Continental Philosophy

 PHI 644: Topics in Contemporary Philosophy (with appropriate content)

 

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS IN PROGRAMS OTHER THAN PHILOSOPHY OR ART:

1.     at least one seminar from Art (any graduate seminar)

2.     at least one seminar from Philosophy (selected from the group listed in B.I  above)

3.     a third seminar from either Art or the listed Philosophy group in B. II. above.

 

 

C.      [three credits]

 

    FOR ALL STUDENTS IN THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM   

The remaining three credits may be obtained in either department but selected from the following list of approved seminars or from courses taught by Certificate Program Faculty:

       PHI 610: Philosophy and the Arts

PHI 637: Epistemology (with appropriate content)

PHI 641: Aesthetics

PHI 643: Semiotics

An acceptable substitute PHI seminar, such as a relevant PHI 619 Topics Seminar, or CLT 601: Seminar in Literary Theory, CLT 602: Interdisciplinary Seminar, or a similar CLT seminar (if taught by a Certificate Program faculty member)

ARH 501: History of 19th Century Art Criticism and Theory

ARH 503: History of 20th Century Art Criticism and Theory

ARH 540: Methodologies of Art History

ARH 550: Inquiries into Art Criticism and Theory

ARH 570: Topics in Architectural History and Theory

Any course approved by petition to the Certificate Program Faculty
